Algarve Travel Guide

Sunny beaches and golf in the Algarve. The Algarve has some of the best beaches in Portugal, but there are plenty to do for active holidaymakers.

The Algarve in southern Portugal is one of the most popular destinations in Europe for both beach and golf holidaymakers. The area has charming towns and numerous activity opportunities.

ALGARVE

The Algarve is a family holiday destination for the whole family

The popular Algarve region covers the entire southern coast of Portugal . The refreshing breezes of the Atlantic, endless sand dunes and miles of continuous, well-maintained sandy beaches are among the region’s strengths, making it a particularly popular destination for beach holidaymakers.

There are dozens of beach resorts in the Algarve. Perhaps the best known of these are Albufeira and Lagos . Praia da Rocha’s five-kilometer beach is also a tourist favorite.

There are beaches to suit all tastes and choice. The beach resorts in the Algarve are in top condition, as evidenced by the fact that as many as 93 Algarve beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag certificate. Blue Flag’s prerequisites include water quality, life-saving operations and waste recycling.

Many beach resorts also offer a variety of activities such as diving trips. The Algarve is also popular with golfers, as you can find high-quality greens in the area.

The beaches of Lagos attract tourists who enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Sunny Algarve

According to DigoPaul, the Algarve has a mildly pleasant climate. In summer, however, temperatures can rise to high: the maximum of the day is regularly thirty. Even in winter, there is no need to dye, as the mercury does not fall much below ten degrees.

Summers in the Algarve are dry and rainy. In winter, from late November to around March, rainfall is more common. There are on average almost three hundred sunny days a year, and even the winter months do not have to worry about the rainy season.

So you can go on a trip to the Algarve practically at any time. However, a beach holiday should be left in the summer, when the weather is favorable and the sea water is over 20 degrees. Winters can be dedicated to golf or city breaks, for example.

This is how you find the best beaches

With almost a hundred Blue Flag certified beaches in the Algarve, you are sure to find a suitable beach.

In Albufeira and Faro, beach lounging can be seamlessly combined with a city break, while Praia dos Três Castelos represents the more idyllic and peaceful side of a beach holiday. You can also look for a peaceful holiday in the elegant Vilamoura, nicknamed Little Monaco.

Families with children will find beaches in Ferragudo and Arrifana, for example, suitable for activities for the whole family. In Amado and Beliche, on the other hand, ferocious heads can do everything from surfing to parasailing.

Choice for the golfer

The range of golf courses in the Algarve is very wide. The largest golf center is located in the central part of the Algarve coast, between Albufeira and Faro, but there are also greens in other parts of the area.

In addition to well-maintained courses, the Algarve also offers a great setting for golfing in terms of its climate. Mild winter and sunny weather guarantee good playing opportunities even in winter.

Taste the delicacies of the sea

The traditional food of the Algarve is hearty but healthy. The maritime location always guarantees fresh ingredients for the widest possible range of fish and seafood delicacies. Sardines in particular are a popular food here. Octopuses, crabs and mussels can also be found on the plate in all their possible forms.

Restaurant food is affordable compared to Finland, and it is always worth deviating from the most popular tourist streets. Feel free to ask the waiter for a recommendation or see what the locals at the next table are ordering. That way, you’ll find delicacies you might not even be able to ask for otherwise.

Portuguese wines are inexpensive gifts if only the kilo limits of luggage give up. Various cork products are also popular souvenirs from the Algarve. Everything from shoes and bags to decorative items are made from cork.

Pay attention to the risk of forest fires

The Algarve is a safe travel destination where you can survive with the usual caution. In the Algarve, it is enough to watch out for handbag and pocket thieves and stay alert in traffic.

It is noteworthy that making an open fire is prohibited throughout Portugal. Both intentionally and unintentionally ignited a forest fire will result in severe penalties, and a forest fire igniter can even be sentenced to prison.
